Married for many years, Ian & Bette have summer cruised the Mediterranean for fourteen years. Their current yacht 'Spirit of Vortigern', was purchased in Spain, fitted out in England, and left for the Mediterranean from the Bristol Festival of the Sea in May 1996.

Ian spent thirty-three years as a professional engineer, working for the Ford Motor Company and finished as the area manager for truck service in the west country; his specialist subjects being diesel engines and fuel systems. He also ran his own fibreglass manufacturing company before deciding that sailing was more fun.

Bette is a qualified chef and has run her own catering business for twenty years. Ian and Bette spend the summer months cruising and chartering in the Mediterranean from May until October, then the boat is laid up for the winter, and they return to their home in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.
